As a cab driver, how much I make each day largely depends on how many passengers I ferry. A cab driver’s main concerns are heavy traffic and finding yourself on streets with no passengers. But I’ve managed to overcome these two thanks to the Galaxy CB radio installed in my cab. I believe it’s one of the essential installations every cab must have.
With it, I’m able to communicate with our dispatch center and get crucial information like where to pick up passengers and where there isn’t heavy traffic. Currently, my cab has the 40 channel Galaxy 959 cb radio which I’ll review starting with features I like.
Three operation modes
Many cb radios on the market today will only offer one or two operation modes. The Galaxy dx 959 cb radio offers SSB (Single Side Band) and PA operation in addition to the common AM. SSB gives a better signal and is more efficient at transmitting over longer distances compared to AM. The PA mode allows you to use the unit as a public address system. Easy to install and use
The dx-959 is the size of your average car cb radio. Weighing slightly over 4 pounds, I found it easy to install on my cab’s dash. The mounting bracket is provided and you won’t need to make any special modifications to install. I also like the fact that the controls and displays are placed at the front panel. The mic however is connected at the side of the unit.
3 easy to read displays
One of the compliments you’ll find in many Galaxy dx-959 radio reviews is the separation of signal, power, SWR; the frequency counter and the channel displays. The signal, power and SWR can be viewed through a large meter display. The frequency counter and channel can be viewed through LED displays each. All displays are backlit. Their lights can be dimmed or switched off for easy viewing.
Automatic SWR tuning for easy setup
I would recommend this cb for anyone who doesn’t want to go through the hassle of SWR tuning to get their unit to work properly. With built in automatic SWR tuning, you’ll be able to use the unit almost right out of the box. A high SWR alert LED light enables you ensure that your dx-959 is always performing at its peak and there’s no risk of damaging it.

Shortcomings of the Galaxy CB radio dx 959
Although I haven’t experienced it myself, some owners of the dx-959 claim that it might produce a low hum when the front panel lights are switched on. Dimming or switching them off usually gets rid of the sound.

The true value of a cb radio is measured through the features offered, ease of use and overall quality. Galaxy dx-959 has proven itself as one of the leading units on the market today. The SSB feature sets it apart from competing units. The design is also user oriented with easy installation and use being the main focus. Overall, if you’re looking for a reliable CB radio for your vehicle, I would recommend investing in a 959dx.
Hello- This is what happens when you use the word assume! I purchased a Galaxy DX 959B radio had it tuned up as recommended and not ever having a CB radio I didn’t know that it came without power wires from the radio to your vehicle.
